Linear wall wash and wall grazing

Lit walls make rooms feel larger and brighter. Washing gives an even vertical surface; grazing brings out texture. The difference is set-back and optic.

Short answer

Wall washing lights a wall evenly from a fixture set back from it, using an asymmetric optic that throws light toward the wall, so the surface looks smooth and bright. Wall grazing places the fixture very close to the wall so light skims across it at a steep angle, which emphasizes texture in stone, brick or concrete (and also shows every drywall imperfection). Choose washing for smooth, even walls, grazing for texture.

Key takeaways

  • Washing = set back from the wall + asymmetric optic = even brightness.
  • Grazing = very close to the wall = texture and shadow.
  • Never graze a flat drywall wall with a critical-light finish unless you want to see every seam.

Wash vs graze

Wall washing Wall grazing
Position Set back from the wall Very close to the wall
Optic Asymmetric, aimed toward the wall Narrow, aimed down the wall face
Result Even, smooth brightness Strong texture, highlights and shadows
Best on Smooth walls, art walls, retail walls Stone, brick, board-formed concrete
Risk Scallops if set too close Shows drywall seams and waviness

Specification checklist

  • Wall height and finish
  • Effect: wash or graze
  • Mounting: recessed slot, surface, or ceiling-to-wall detail
  • Set-back from the wall
  • Optic (asymmetric wash, or narrow graze)
  • Lumens per foot, CCT, CRI (high CRI for merchandise and art)
  • Run length and corners at wall ends

Frequently asked questions

How far from the wall should a linear wall washer be?

A common starting point is a set-back of roughly one quarter to one third of the wall height, then confirmed with the product’s photometric file. Grazing positions are much closer, typically within a few inches.

Can one fixture both wash and graze?

Not well. The set-back and optic that give an even wash are different from those that give strong grazing. Choose one effect per wall.
